Opinion no. 10 of the Consultative Council of European Judges of the Council of Europe (CCJE) aims to identify the core elements in relation to the general mission, composition and functions of the Council for the Judiciary with a view to strengthening democracy and to protecting the independence of the judiciary. The questionnaire that was used for gathering information containts useful information on the composition and competences of Councils for the Judiciary in Europe. (preliminary work CCJE opinion no. 10).

The Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe adopted Recommendation CM/Rec(2010)12 on judges; independence, efficicency and responsibilities. Chapter IV deals with Councils for the Judiciary.
