New President starts mandate |

On January 1st Mr Justice Paul Gilligan took over the ENCJ Presidency from Mr Miguel Carmona Ruano. Paul Gilligan has announced that during his presidency he will strive to assist in advancing and strengthening the standing of the ENCJ on the European stage. His focal point will be the continued improvement of cooperation by sharing experiences and expanding best practices within Europe in the field of Justice with a view to increasing the quality and efficiency in delivering justice to the citizen.
Paul Gilligan is a High Court judge and member of the Board of the Courts Service of Ireland. |

European Patent Office offers internship for national judges |

|
The European Patent Office offers a limited number of internship places for national judges of the EPC contracting states at the EPO Boards of Appeal. The programme is organised by the European Patent Academy, whose objectives include the promotion of equal access to training opportunities related to international and European patent law and practice in all current and future EPC contracting states, and the Boards of Appeal.

Newly elected and appointed Judicial Council Slovakia |

The newly elected and appointed members of the Judicial Council of Slovakia held their meeting mid-October 2012. The Council is composed as follows: President: 1. Štefan Harabin Members elected by judges in June 2012: 2. Ján Vanko, 3. Jana Bajánková, 4. Imrich Volkai, 5. Milan Ďurica, 6. Peter Straka, 7. Rudolf Čirč, 8. Dana Bystrianska, 9. Igor Burger Members elected by the National Council of the Slovak Repulic (parliament) in May/June 2012: 10. Dušan Čimo, 11. Jozef Maruščák, 12. 11 new members for Judicial Council of Lithuania |

On November 9th during the General Meeting of Judges 11 new members of the Judicial Council were elected. In accordance with the recently amended Law on Courts the number of members of the Judicial Council increased from 21 to 23.

New Members for the Belgian and Bulgarian Councils |

The new Bulgarian Supreme Judicial Council (picture) met for the first time on 3 October 2012. Ms Sonya Naidenova, formerly a judge in Sofia City Court, and elected by Parliament, was elected the Council’s representative and primary spokesperson. The 22 members are elected by their peers (11) or appointend by the National Assembly (11 from judges, prosecutors, law professors etc). The President of the Supreme Court, the President of the Supreme Adminsitrative Court and the Proesecutor General are ex-officio member. The Minister Of Justice officially chairs the Council. The term of the mandate is 5 years.
The 44 newly elected members of the Belgian High Council of Justice started their mandate in September 2012. At its first General Assembly the permanent members of the Board were elected. The four members of the Board will each serve one term as President of the Belgian High Council for Justice. The Board is composed of:
- Mr Eric Staudt (President September 2012-September 2013)
- Ms Ria Mortier (President September 2013-September 2014)
- Ms Michèle Loquifer (President September 2014-September 2015)
- Mr Tony van Parys (President September 2015-September 2016)
